Artistas de San Gabriel Chilac denuncian plagio de Shein en blusa con bordados típicos de la comunidad

Artisans from San Gabriel Chilac have accused the Asian giant Shein of plagiarism, alleging that the company has copied distinctive embroidered blouses from their community. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

Xochimeztli, a project that emerged in San Gabriel Chilac and creates artisanal products from the Sierra Negra region, posted about the case on its Instagram account and demanded an end to Shein's illegal appropriation.

"As artisans from this community, we are outraged by the plagiarism that this platform, once again, has committed with our traditional textiles made in our community of Sn Gabriel Chilac, Puebla," they stated on the American social media platform owned by Meta.

The project also expressed frustration with unfair competition from industrialization and transnational platforms like Shein. They clarified that the blouse in question originated decades ago and features traditional hand-embroidered motifs based on community symbols.

"The small embroidered strips have been part of the iconography and history of our dresses and blouses," they detailed.

On behalf of San Gabriel Chilac's artisans, they demanded a resolution to what they considered an aberration within the fashion industry.

Lastly, they clarified that while Xochimeztli does not own the design itself, it represents a defense of collective intellectual property rights within their community.
